World Record: UAE’s Muhammad Waseem Becomes First Batter To Hit 100 Sixes in A Calendar Year

UAE captain Muhammad Waseem became the first cricketer to smash 100 international sixes in a calendar year after hitting three of them in the second T20I against Afghanistan on December 31.

Waseem bowled Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmad at deep midwicket on the roof of the Sharjah Cricket Stadium to score his 100th sixth of the year.

He hits one more ball and ends 2023 with 101 sixes, the most overs of the year. This is followed by Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who scored six points and 80 hits in 2023, 78 in 2019 and 74 in 2018, occupying the next third spot on the list. Suryakumar Yadav also scored 74 sixes in 2022.

Unlike Rohit, Waseem plays only two formats. As an opening batsman, at the end of the year he averaged 35.76 and 1,645 runs in his 47 matches of T20Is and his ODIs.

In T20Is alone, he had hit 54 sixes in 23 matches. This is his most in a single year, second only to his 68 in Surya in 2022. In fact, Surya and Waseem share the top five spots on this list.

In ODIs, Waseem’s record was 47 sixes in 24 matches. This is his fifth highest total in a calendar year for a batsman, but the highest for a member nation.

Speaking of the second T20I, Waseem’s opener with 53 runs off 32 deliveries consisting of 4 fours and 3 sixes, and Aryan Lakra’s 63 runs helped the hosts score 166 despite being the opener. He played an important role in leading to the score.

In response, Afghanistan continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, falling from 62-2 to 99-6, with Mohammad Nabi stuck on one side. Although 12 pitches were needed for two throws, Nabi was ejected after hitting 47 of 27 pitches, and the team lost by 11 points.

The United Arab Emirates fought their way back into the series after losing the first game. With the series in jeopardy, they will be gunning for a chance to win the playoffs on his January 2nd.
