Why I left Arsenal- AFCON-bound Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali

Nwakali was one of the best players selected for the Nigeria U17 World Cup squad in 2015, after which Arsenal signed him.

Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has revealed that he left English Premier League club Arsenal because he needed a place to establish himself, Soccernet.ng reports.

Nwakali was one of Nigeria’s best players in the 2015 U17 World Cup. The 25-year-old midfielder has made a name for himself with his creativity and brilliance with the ball.

After success in the tournament, the Premier League giants signed the Nigerian midfielder. Given the promise he showed at youth level, he was expected to feature at Arsenal, but he was unable to play for the club and was forced to leave through various loan spells in the Netherlands and Portugal.

Nwakali spent three years with the Gunners before moving to Spanish club Huesca in 2019. The Nigerian midfielder has revealed his reasons for leaving the North Londoners.

“I decided to leave Arsenal after three years because the process of obtaining a work permit was difficult and I had to move to Spain, where I signed with Huesca. I also needed a place to call home and settle down. I did,” Nwakali told Nigeria Info FM.

Since leaving Arsenal in 2019, Nwakali has spent time on loan at Alcorcón and Ponferradina. He left Huesca permanently at the beginning of the year after a dispute with the club.

The 25-year-old currently plays for Portuguese club Chaves, making 14 appearances and providing three assists.
