Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi has rubbished claims that he is underestimating Lesotho after the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers ended in a 1-1 draw, Soccernet.ng reported.
In the match played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Lesotho took an unexpected lead with Motlomelo Mkhwanazi’s goal in the 56th minute.
The Super Eagles created several chances but struggled to capitalize on them until Semi Ajayi scored the home team’s equalizer.
The main chances included a free kick by Kelechi Iheanacho that was saved in the first half and a near miss that hit the wooden frame in the second half.
Speaking to the press after the match, the West Bromwich Albion defender flatly denied having underestimated him.
“Absolutely not. We took this game very seriously. We did our best. We didn’t disrespect them,” Ajay asserted.
He reiterated the team’s preparation and commitment, highlighting the team’s seriousness in playing against Lesotho and the team’s commitment to learn and improve from this experience.
“We prepared like every game. I think we were unlucky not to take some chances, but we learned from it and will definitely come back stronger in the next game. “I’ll be back,” he added.
José Peceiro’s side will now focus on their next match against Zimbabwe’s Warriors on Sunday at the Hue Stadium in Butare. The Super Eagles are determined to regroup and secure a decisive victory in their next encounter.
