Watch: Stunning Direct Hit From Hashmatullah Shahidi Sees Afghanistan Take Two In Two

Watch: Afghanistan picked up two wickets in two balls on Day Two against Sri Lanka today (February 3), when Dhananjaya de Silva was disastrously run out for a duck after being sent back by Angelo Mathews.

Sri Lanka was in a good position after defeating Afghanistan by 198 points in Colombo. Both Matthews and Dinesh Chandimal scored centuries as the hosts reached 380-3 before the end of the match. However, Chandimal was sent off late in the final session after the ball from Naveed Zadran was caught by the goalkeeper.

This wicket brought de Silva to the crease to see out the last 20 minutes of the game. The first ball from Zadran was full and he drove to mid-off and immediately hit a single. Matthews, without looking at his partner and keeping his eye on the ball, started running towards de Silva from the non-striker’s side. However, Hashmatullah’s Shahidi was able to jump full body from the cover and grab the ball.

Matthews immediately motioned for de Silva to turn back, even though he was halfway through the field. De Silva still would have had time to assert himself, but Shahidi’s throw was accurate and de Silva was clearly too short.

Matthews was out for 141 on the last ball of the day and had the misfortune of wiping out his own stumps while trying to play a sweep shot over long hop-down leg. With this wicket, Sri Lanka ended his second day with her 410 for 6, leading Afghanistan by 212 runs.
