Watch: A six by Nasum Ahmed during the Sri Lanka-Bangladesh Super Four match at the 2023 Asia Cup led to some discussion.
Bangladesh were all out for 258 at the R Premadasa Stadium but were reduced to 216-9 when No. 11 Hasan Mahmud joined No. 9 Nasum Ahmed. Hasan hit two four-fours off Matisha Pathirana. At the other end, Mahish Teekshana’s ball was knocked down by Nasoom Ahmed.
Substitute fielder Dushyant Hemantha jumped up and caught the ball in the air. But when he realized he was going over the line, he put the ball back into play.
Referees Jayaraman Madanagopal and Paul Wilson referred the decision to television referee Langton LeSerre, who awarded him six points. Thedecision upset broadcast commentators Roshan Abeysinghe and Dominic Corke.
Their confusion is probably understandable. Hemantha’s boot touched the rope as he jumped, but when he took his catch and threw it back, he was completely in the air.
However, the Tribunal rightly referred to Law 19.5.2. “A fielder who is not touching the ground is considered to be out of the field when on the field, having made last contact with the ground. “After the bowler bowls the ball, until his first contact with the ball, the ground is completely bounded It wasn’t inside.”
Hemantha’s “last contact with the ground” before “first contact with the ball after the bowler played it” was actually “not fully within the boundary line” ”.
Nasum’s six sixes took him to 25 off 15 balls, while Nasum and Mahmood added three singles to take his score to 22 off 12 balls. Pathirana brought Nasum to York with the first ball of the next over, ending the game. p>
Sri Lanka and Pakistan won their only Super 4 matches, while Bangladesh lost both.
