Watch: Shoaib Bashir Dismisses Rohit Sharma For First Test Wicket

Watch: Shoaib Bashir’s Test career got off to a memorable start with the wicket of India skipper Rohit Sharma in the first session of the India-England Visakhapatnam Test.

England made two changes for the second Test, recalling James Anderson for Mark Wood and replacing the injured Jack Leach with the unused Bashir. Before the first Test, Bashir’s absence from his team for the Test caused considerable discussion. He arrived late due to visa issues and was unable to play in the match in Hyderabad.

When Bashir joined the team last week, he was confirmed to play the day before and was presented with his cap by Somerset teammate Leach on the morning of the match.

As the third spinner behind Joe Root and Tom Hartley, the 20-year-old Bashir bowled the 12th over and used his 1.80m height to add a little more swing.

In the 18th over, Bashir made his first breakthrough. Rohit trying to outrun the inbounds ball, his Sharma ends up giving Olly a catch to his Pope with a slip of the foot. It was Bashir’s 11th first-class wicket.

In his commentary, Sunil Gavaskar praised Ben Stokes’ fielding, saying, “It’s great captaincy. There aren’t many captains who don’t let their foot slip in the field.”

He further added, “Rohit may have forgotten that his foot slipped because he showed movement.”

Harsha Bhogle later described Rohit’s approach as “overly cautious”.
