Watch: Shakib Al Hasan bowled Jonny Bairstow in the Englishman’s 100th ODI today (October 10) in Dharamsala, deceiving him with clever set up to take out his leg stump.
Bairstow already has a half-century and scored his hundred in the opening stand with Dawid Malan. With Bangladesh fielding his three spinners and not seeing much change in the surface, England looked capable of scoring a big score at 115-0 in his 18 overs.
Shakib had been bowling sparingly till this point, conceding 21 runs in five overs. His two balls, which he bowled to Bairstow before entering the wicket, were the key to the breakthrough.
The first pitch was a slow flying throw that spun over the outside edge before the second landed flat and was defended by Bairstow. Shakib delivered the killing blow faster than the previous two, aiming for Bairstow and smashing him in the midsection and leg. The ball did not curve and bounced a little more, passing through Bairstow who tried to hit the ball to his leg side and hitting the top of his leg stump.
Shakib cheered loudly for his decisive breakthrough, his 38th World Cup. Commentator Nasser Hussain said the match was “Shakib at his best”.
Bairstow’s half-century is his 16th in ODIs and his first since returning to the format after breaking his leg last year. His wickets left England at 1 for 115, and Joe his route was placed in the middle alongside Malan.
