Watch: Shaheen Afridi had his revenge when he dismissed Shubman Gill with a slower ball after the latter had hit him for six boundaries in two overs earlier in the India-Pakistan match today (September 10) in Colombo.
Gill got off to a quick start in India’s first Superfords match against Pakistan. He had struggled against them in the group stage after scoring 10 of his 32 points for Palekele, but he came into the game today with positive intentions.
Between Afridi’s second and third overs, Gill smashed him with six boundaries, from cover drives to lofted straight drives and flick shots. Gill marked his first half-century against Pakistan in senior international cricket as he reached 50 in his 13th over off 37 balls.
Afridi, who was removed from the attack in the third over, was brought back for the second stint in the 18th over, shortly after Shadab Khan dismissed Rohit Sharma in the 17th over. And Afridi won the gold medal by eliminating Gill, dealing a double blow to India.
The fifth ball of the over was a slow ball that was outside the stumps and Gill could not read it. He tried to attack cover, but went into the shot too early and was easily caught by Salman Agha, who was in cover. Gill’s innings ended with 58 off 52 pitches. Considering his touchdown, Gil would have been disappointed if he hadn’t turned it into a big score.
After six overs, play was stopped due to rain and India’s score was 147-2 in 24.1 overs.
