Watch: Joe Root was dismissed lbw by R Ashwin after the on field umpire’s decision was overturned on day three of the fourth India-England Test in Ranchi.
England started the second with a lead of 46 runs after Dhruv Jhuler led India by over 300 runs. England got off to a good start with Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, with R Ashwin taking two wickets from successive balls in five overs to reduce the visitors to 19-2, bringing Joe Root to the crease.
Root worked with Crawley to keep the scoreboard moving and put the match out of India’s reach one point at a time. Root, who hit 11 of 33 shots, looked composed and was starting to feel comfortable by the time Ashwin hit his third shot.
While bowling near the wicket, a full shot was hit on leg stump and hit the inside edge of Root, prompting a loud appeal from India. Kumar Dharamsena did not let his guard down on the field and forced India into review.
When the first replay was shown on the big screen, many thought the leg stump would be cut off or missed. However, tracking the ball showed that the impact was in a straight line and the ball hit the leg stump, meaning Root had to take the long way back.
