Watch: R Ashwin quickly decoded David Warner’s right-handed ploy to combat his off-spin, deceiving the Australia opener with a carrom ball in the second ODI at Indore.
Warner decided to change his stance when playing against the legendary Indian spinners, and initially it worked. After playing the turn as a left-hander, he hit six of his three balls against Ashwin which took him to one over, including a sweeping four which was quite entertaining for the away side.
He then came to Ashwin and made a plan. Warner, still standing right-handed, threw a carom ball. The Australian therefore reversed, but missed the target and was stuck in front.
The weirdness didn’t end there, as Warner opted to review, but replays showed he had a clear inside advantage on the ball.
Warner has played as a right-handed batsman in the past, appearing as a right-handed batsman in the Bangladesh and Indian Premier Leagues, and even serving as a substitute for the Australian national team. He also practiced batting with both his right and left hands ahead of Australia’s Test tour to India earlier this year. However, this is believed to be the first time he has played against the wrong hand in international cricket.
He is the second international batsman to recently change stance, following Joe Root, who played left-handed on England’s Test tour to Pakistan last year.

One of the strangest dismissals you’ll see.
Since David Warner is right-handed, R Ashwin plays carom ball. So Warner reverses and hits a sweep but misses and gets pounded.
However, replays showed that he actually had insider clues but didn’t verify them 😅# INDvAUS a > pic.twitter.com/bcfdObyiZ8
