Watch: Kagiso Rabada produced an absolute peach to smash Josh Inglis’ stumps, rocking Australia back in their run-chase of 312 against South Africa today (October 12) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
South Africa had Australia buzzing as Pat Cummins’ side began their quest for their first World Cup win of 2023 with 312 points. Mitchell Marsh was the first to fall his wicket, scoring 27 on the fifth ball of six overs.
His opening partner David Warner took the lead in the next over, cutting a short ball straight to deny Lungi Ngidi’s bowler. Australia would have hoped to rebuild with the pair of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne at the third wicket crease. But it wasn’t meant to be.
The penultimate ball of the first power play created a moment that will be talked about for a while. Steve Smith was not dismissed on the pitch, but after a review the decision was reversed and Smith continued to react in shock. At 50-3 it looked like Australia were going to get nowhere. But there was no end to her suffering.
Kagiso Rabada, who had beaten Smith in the 10th over, returned and produced an untouchable beauty to Josh Inglis in the next over. The ball was angled inside and hit the middle and outside of the wicket for a good length. The ball stayed on the line, hit the outside edge of Inglis and bounced off the off and middle stumps, causing another shock reaction in the dismissed Australian batsman. However, Ingris’s reaction this time had to do with the way he spoke and his admission that he had been beaten.
After 15 overs, Australia’s score was 61-4.
Earlier in the day, Quinton de Kock’s hundred led the way for South Africa to go past 300. In fact, everyone contributed with the bat for South Africa, with each of their top seven going past 15 and six of them going past 25.
