Kane Williamson, returning to the New Zealand team after a long injury layoff, won the toss and was selected to bowl at the Chidambaram Stadium in Massachusetts. Lytton Das struck Trent Boult on the first pitch of the game, but mistimed it and returned to the pavilion for a golden duck.
Tanjid Hasan (16) and Mehdi Hasan Miraz added 40 in 47 balls, with Lockie Ferguson removing both in quick succession. With two new left-handed batsmen at the crease, Williamson asked Phillips to bowl 13 overs.
Phillips started near the ticket gate. The first ball was a daily off-break, hitting a length to middle stump and holding the line. Shant tried to push the ball towards the curve, but lacked pace from the surface and ended up playing the ball earlier than he wanted.
As a result, Shunt was unable to keep his punches on the ground. Instead, it flew into the air and Devon Conway made a great catch as he lunged forward. With Bangladesh leading 56-4, Ian Bishop shouted: “What an arm of gold!”
Williamson took off Phillips in the second over. They sacked Moeen Ali and Joe Root against England, while Babar Azam and Jos Buttler are on the pre-World Cup casualty list.
However, till the World Cup, he had 6 wickets at 39.67 in 20 ODIs. His record here is 7-0-41-3 and this is his third fight.
At the time of writing, Bangladesh were 124-4 in 26.2 overs. Shakib Al Hasan, 21, and Mushfiqur Rahim, 46, were standing in the goal area.
