Watch: Glenn Phillips took his maiden Test wicket with a high full toss, which Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto slogged down mid-on’s throat on day one of the first BAN vs NZ Test in Sylhet today (November 28).
Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat first. They played with three spinners like New Zealand. The visitors selected Glenn Phillips ahead of Rachin Ravindra and Mitchell Santner to add variety to their spin attack, and it paid off.
Ajaz Patel gave his team their first breakthrough by removing Zakir Hasan in the 13th over of the day. Bangladesh’s captain, Shanto, has very aggressive intentions which helped him rise to third place.
Once the ball was squared at the start of the first session, Shant wasted no time instructing the New Zealand spinners to attack. He hit his six on his fourth ball and hit a boundary on his sixth ball.
Shant paid particular attention to Patel’s left-arm spin and hit three sixes in his short playing time. Phillips was still playing in his second Test match and joined the attack in his 23rd over for the first time in his Test career.
Phillips bowled well in the recently concluded India World Cup and didn’t take long to find himself among the wickets, but he himself didn’t quite understand it. The second ball of the second over was a big full toss, and Shandong desperately tried to land it in the stands. He tried to break out and go over the leg side, but was hit by Kane Williamson in the middle, giving New Zealand their second wicket and Phillips his first.
But Phillips wasn’t done yet. He finished his opening day with his four wickets in the bag (wickets of Shanto, Mominul Haque, Shahadat Hossain and Nurul Hasan) and justified his selection.
Bangladesh finished the day with 310 wins and 9 losses, while Phillips ended the day with 16 wins and 1 loss, 53 wins and 4 losses.
