Watch: Glenn Maxwell played two audacious switch hits in the 47th over against the Netherlands in the 2023 World Cup en route to the fastest ton in the competition, in only 40 balls.
Maxwell came into bat at number 6 in the 39th over of the innings, but faced only the first ball in the 41st over and went on to score a staggering 106 in just 44 balls with the help of eight sixes. I scored a knockout. He reached 50 in 27 balls with a masterful reverse sweep, reaching that milestone for the first time in 16 innings.
Vas de Lied’s second ball of the 47th over was full and on the stumps, but Maxwell got under it and swept it behind for a six. Two balls later, he turned again and continued his attack with another six of his short throws.
Maxwell needed just 13 balls to go from 50 to 100, breaking Aiden Markram’s World Cup record for fastest 100 by nine balls. Markram scored 100 off 49 balls in the first match of this year’s World Cup in South Africa against Sri Lanka. Also, this was his fourth fastest hundred in Men’s ODIs after AB de Villiers (31 balls), Corey Anderson (36 balls) and Shahid Afridi (37 balls).
Led by Maxwell and David Warner (104 points off 93), Australia finished with 399 wins and 8 losses and was looking for their third consecutive title.
