Watch: Charlie Dean took three wickets in one over on her way to a maiden international five-wicket-haul today (September 14) in the final ODI of England’s series against Sri Lanka in Leicester.
England dominated Sri Lanka in the final ODI of three consecutive matches played at Grace Road, winning the rain-shortened match by 161 runs. Nat Silver-Brunt, who was acting as stand-in captain for the ill Heather Knight, achieved the fastest ODI century in England women’s history with 66 balls after her turn. She reached 193 runs alongside Maia Bouchier, who scored her first half-century in ODIs, but she was dismissed for 95 runs.
While Shiver-Brant and Bouchier were active with the bat, Dean was the biggest threat with the ball. After setting Sri Lanka an improbable target of 274, both Lauren Filer and Mahika Gaur took wickets in the powerplay, sparking a dramatic collapse. Dean went into attack in the 8th over and hit the 5th ball to take the big wicket of Chamari Atapattu.
However, he broke through the back of Sri Lanka’s middle order in his fourth over. Hanshima Karunaratne finished the first ball with a great catch and bowling. Dean pulled Karunaratne across the wicket to play a defensive shot, but the ball missed the face of her bat and came back to the bowler. Dean jumped to his right and grabbed the ball with both hands just before it hit the ground.
Wicket brought Kavisha Dilhari to the crease and picked up a single from the first delivery. Hasini’s Perera came into bat, Dean deflected the ball from the left-handed pitcher and caught the outside edge of the bat, and Amy Jones caught the ball behind the stumps.
Dilhari returned to bat on Dean’s last ball and was completely beaten by the ball as it spun back between the bats and bounced off the stumps. Dean achieved his first five-wicket international success with the wicket of Udeshika Prabodhani and finished the match with 5-31-0-6.
