Watch: Bas de Leede bowled a game-changing double-wicket over against Pakistan today (October 6), taking the wickets of Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed in the space of five balls during Netherlands’ first World Cup game at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
Netherlands started the 2023 World Cup season well, holding Pakistan in their defense with three wickets. However, a 120-run partnership between Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan for the fourth wicket catapulted Pakistan back into the match.
Pakistan, with 158 wins and 4 losses in 28.1 overs, had a solid foundation for the death overs with Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed playing well at the crease. De Reid bowled his 32 in his over of the innings and Rizwan rewarded him with a great on-drive after the second ball.
However, De Lied was persistent and responded with a brilliant in-seamer that broke through Rizwan’s defense and left the Pakistan wicket-keeper in disbelief. The next ball was hit by new batsman Mohammad Nawaz, who recorded four more hits. But more happened.
On the last ball of the over, de Reid forced Iftikhar to push the ball out, but in the process he fell behind and gave Pakistan a huge double punch, taking the score of the game from 182 to 188-6- Reduced to 4.
However, the Dutch joy did not last long as the seventh wicket pair, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz, formed a 64-run partnership to take Pakistan to over 250 points. Ultimately, their partnership was broken by De Reid himself, like Rizwan, returning in the 44th over to bring down Shadab’s stumps.
