Watch: During a World Cup match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, Angelo Mathews became the first batter to be ruled timed out in an international match.
Sri Lanka were called to bat and were 135-4 in 24.2 overs when Shakib Al Hasan Sadira caught Samarawickrama. It was 3:49pm local time. One minute later, at 3:50 p.m., Angelo Matthews left to join Charice Asaranka.
When Matthews went outside and took over the lookout, he noticed that the strap on his helmet was broken. Then, the substitute fielder officially hit the substitute and jumped out.
As the clock ticked down, Shakib appealed to referee Mare Erasmus in accordance with ICC Men’s World Cup Condition of Play 40.1: “After the fall of a wicket or the dismissal of a batsman, the arriving batsman must not pass the called time and must be ready to receive the ball or within two minutes of being out or out another batsman must You must ensure that you are ready to receive the ball. If this requirement is not met, the batter will be out and timed out.”
Matthews had arrived in the goal area but was not yet “ready to receive the ball.” Erasmus appeared to be discussing the complaint with Shakib, but the captain continued.
At 3.54pm, Matthews, who had just become the first cricketer to be timed out in both international and List A cricket (or recorded professional limited-overs cricket), was visibly unhappy. There are many instances where batters risk losing timeouts. Perhaps the most famous of them is Britain’s David Steele. When he first came out to bat in Test cricket, he got lost and found himself outside the men’s toilet. In Cape Town in 2006/07,Sourav Ganguly also almost lost. However, the field team did not appeal these cases.
However, six batsmen were ruled out in first-class cricket: Andrew Jordan, Hemlal Yadav, Busbert Drakes, Andrew Harris, Ryan Austin and Charles Kunje. Of these, Drakes East is known to have been on another continent when he was exhibited in London.
