Watch: 9 Balls, 8 Sixes

Watch: Nepal batter Dipendra Singh Airee scored a nine-ball half-century in the 2023 Asian Games against Mongolia, setting, quite literally, an unbreakable record.

Nepal and Mongolia were involved in a bizarre cricket match that broke several records, some of which will never be broken again.

Nepal, who was the top batter at the famously narrow Zhejiang University of Technology Cricket Ground in Hangzhou, achieved an impressive record of 314 wins and 3 losses in 20 overs against Mongolia in their first official international match.

Kushal Mala became the fastest scorer in the history of men’s T20I centuries, reaching triple digits in 34 balls. He remained unbeaten on 137 off 50 balls with eight fours and 12 sixes. If the fastest T20I century was not enough, Nepal’s innings also marked his fastest half-century in all of T20 cricket.

Irey, who came to bat at number five in the 19th over, hit eight sixes off 10 balls and reached his half-century in an incredible nine balls.

The first six balls he faced were deposited as sixes, five of which came from the bowling of Mungun Altankyag in the 19th over and one from Lubsanzundui Erdeneburgan in the 20th over. Iley then got a deuce on his seventh pitch, reaching 38.

Two more sixes were hit in the next two balls and he scored 50 from 9 balls. Without support from the overs, it is impossible for a batsman to reach his 50 points faster. He ended Nepal’s innings with another score and remained unbeaten on 52 off 10 balls.

As this tournament has T20I status, records made in this tournament will be added to the official T20I record.

Later, Nepal also defeated Mongolia with the ball, knocking them out of the game by 41 points and winning by 273 points.
