Watch: Jos Buttler was bowled by Kuldeep Yadav’s sharply turning stock ball, which smashed into middle-stump to leave England 52-5 in their chase against India in Lucknow.
England reached 230 points and struggled to beat the league leaders. They lost their first two wickets on successive balls from Jasprit Bumrah, before Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow were both bowled by Mohammad Shami. With Os Buttler and Moeen Ali closing in on the crease, Rohit Sharma turned to left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the 14th over.
From the first ball of the second over, Kuldeep gave the England captain an absolute hit. He bowled the ball over the off stump, but Buttler returned and tried to cut it offside. However, the ball bounced dramatically into him, snaking between his racket and pad.
The ball bounced over the middle stumps, leaving Buttler hanging on to the bat and rolling on the ground behind him. Kuldeep spread his arms and walked joyfully, after which he was hugged by Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul.
Buttler returned to the locker room with his team down five games and facing a four-game losing streak with five losses in six games at the 2023 World Cup. England are currently bottom of the table and he has only won one of his five games so far.
India won by 100 runs and regained the top spot, but England lost the lead.
