Victor Boniface: Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen provides pleasing update on Super Eagles star’s surgery

The Nigerian international will not be part of the country’s quest for a fourth AFCON title in Cote d’Ivoire

Bundesliga campaigners Bayer Leverkusen have revealed that Nigerian forward Victor Boniface had surgery today on the injury that will keep him out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Soccernet.ng reports.

Boniface suffered a muscle tendon injury in the right adductor area at the training camp in Dubai as the Super Eagles stepped up preparation for the 34th edition of the AFCON.

The Nigerian forward immediately left camp and returned to his club, where he was scheduled for surgery in Berlin.

With a statement on their official X account (formerly Twitter), Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed that the surgery was successful.

The striker is expected to return to Leverkusen, where he will begin his rehabilitation immediately.

Despite the successful surgery, Boniface will remain out of action for three months and will not return to the pitch until April.

The 23-year-old, a key figure in Bayer Leverkusen’s excellent rise to the top of the Bundesliga table, will miss 18 games for club and country during this period.

Boniface, Leverkusen’s top scorer with ten goals in 16 outings, was tipped to be one of the outstanding stars of the 2023 AFCON before he got injured.

Nigeria have called OGC Nice striker Terem Moffi to take his place as the Super Eagles remain focused on winning their first continental triumph in ten years.
