Max Verstappen has been named the best driver of the 2023 F1 season by 19 drivers, with Lewis Hamilton once again taking second place.
F1 has announced its first annual list of the top 10 drivers selected by the competition. Usually they publish a list of team bosses, but this time it was the drivers they picked the best, and as expected, Red Bull’s Verstappen returned to the top.
However, Mercedes driver Hamilton overtook Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to return to second place after missing 2022. Unlike previous seasons, F1 makes no mention of points scored by individual drivers and there is no evidence of a draw.
Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso was third, moving up three places from the 2022 season after finishing fourth in this year’s Drivers’ Championship. Even McLaren’s Lando Norris has moved up one place from his fifth place finish last year to put him in fourth place.
After a season of ups and downs in 2023, Leclerc has dropped three places and is currently in fifth place, while teammate Carlos Sainz is sixth, moving up one place compared to 2022. Next up was Williams’ Alexander Albon, who moved up two places from last year to seventh place.
Top rookies Oscar Piastri of McLaren and Pierre Gasly of Alpine entered the race for the first time in 8th and 9th place, while Sergio Perez of Red Bull was miserable despite remaining in the drivers’ standings. After a long run, I finished in 10th place.
The Mexican has had a very inconsistent performance and has dropped two places from his 2022 ranking. Unlike last year, the two drivers not available were Mercedes’ George Russell and Sebastian Vettel, the latter of course following his retirement.
The following drivers took part in the voting (excluding Lewis Hamilton, who did not take part): Alex Albon, Fernando Alonso, Valtteri Bottas, Pierre Gasly, Nico Hulkenberg, Charles Leclerc, Kevin Magnussen, Lando Norris, Esteban Ocon, Sergio Perez, Oscar Piastri, Daniel Ricciardo, George Russell, Carlos Sainz, Logan Sargent, Lance Stroll, Yuki Tsunoda, Max Verstappen , Zhou Guangyu
