In a recent interview, UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley expressed a desire to move up to featherweight, albeit conditionally.
At UFC 292, Sean O’Malley made a huge impact by defeating bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling, capturing the attention of the UFC and its fans. Dana White recognizes O’Malley’s potential and sees him as an up-and-coming superstar similar to Conor McGregor. O’Malley’s goal is to mirror McGregor’s path and become a two-weight champion, with him eyeing a move to featherweight, where Alexander Volkanovski is champion. However, this ambition is subject to certain conditions. Let’s take a closer look at when he plans to make this change.
UFC Champ Sean O’Malley Wants To Move Up To Featherweight Division
Mr. O’Malley confidently declared that by winning the company’s championship title, a new era, the so-called “Suga era,” had begun. The company is actively promoting him as an up-and-coming superstar, with the goal of elevating both him and his company to greater heights and attracting a wider audience. Now, O’Malley has his sights set on the featherweight division, although Volkanoski doesn’t belong in that category.
As seen in a recent chat, O’Malley was asked if he would consider moving up in weight class, to which he replied, “I would be happy to do that even if Alexander Volkanovski isn’t the champion.” Pound for pound, he’s currently the best in the world…which means he’s confident he can blow anyone away. I feel like I can definitely beat Alexander Volkanovski. That would be very, very, very difficult. I mean, maybe in a year or two he’ll still be there, I would, but I think he’ll go up to 155. ”
There is no doubt that the Australian champion is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the league. He was a dominant force in his division for quite some time. Facing him will be a huge challenge and O’Malley believes the move to featherweight won’t be easy now that the Australian fighter is no longer in the field.
