Two players of Nigerian descent, Leverkusen’s Boniface and Freiburg’s Atubolu up for Bundesliga award

Bayer Leverkusen striker Viktor Bonifatius and SC Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubol have been nominated for the Bundesliga’s Rookie of the Month award for August, Soccernet.ng reports.

Both players won the award after impressing their respective clubs in the first few weeks of the 2023/24 season.

Bonifatius took the Bundesliga by storm this summer when he joined Leverkusen from Belgian club Union Saint Giroise. The 22-year-old forward has scored four goals and contributed two assists in just three of his league games in Germany.

Bonifatius scored two goals over the weekend, one of which was in the top five Bundesliga Matchday 3 goals.

The Nigerian striker is a frontrunner for Rookie of the Year, but will face stiff competition from German-Nigerian goalkeeper Atubol.

Atubor, born in Freiburg im Breisgau, has been with SC Freiburg since the age of 13, playing in the regional league and the club’s reserve team in the third division.

However, he made his Bundesliga debut in August, scoring in Freiburg’s first three games and keeping one clean sheet.
