TV Umpire Reopens Review After Mistaking On-Field Decision In Bangladesh-Afghanistan World Cup Game

The TV umpire was involved in a controversial review in the Bangladesh-Afghanistan game at the World Cup in Dharamsala today (October 7).

In the 25th over of Bangladesh’s chase against Afghanistan, Mehdi Hasan Miraz was caught on his pads by Mujeeb-ur-Rahman’s partner. After a lengthy appeal from the Afghan side, the on-field umpire raised his finger, which Miraz held out for review.

Replays showed that the impact was due to an “umpire’s decision” and that the ball spun far enough back to hit the wicket. However, the issue was whether the ball hit the inside edge of Miller’s racket before hitting Millers’ pad. Television referee Ahsan Raz ruled in Miraz’s favor.

However, in a moment of confusion, he asked the on-field umpire to stick with the “not out” decision. Contrary to Raza’s belief, the on-field call was an “out” and on-field umpire Joel Wilson looked confused.

However, the TV referee soon realized his mistake and tried the review process again, this time assuming there had been a correct outcall on the pitch. His conclusion was the same again. Miraz hit the ball with his bat before it even made contact with his pads. This time he rightly asked Wilson to rescind his “not out” decision. Understandably, a lot of time was wasted between his third ball and his fourth in the 25th over.

Miraz then tried to overpunch Naveen Al Haq and was eventually dismissed in the fourth over. Rahmat Shah scored a one-handed stunner over the middle to end Miraz’s innings on 57 off 73 balls. By the time he was fired, Miraz had led Bangladesh to a 124-3 record, needing just 33 points to win the opening round of the World Cup.

Earlier, Afghanistan failed to capitalize on their good start and fell back from 112-2 to 156 from 38 overs. Shakib Al Hasan and Miraz both picked his three wickets.
