The 2024 ICC men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup will be played between in January and February next year. Here is all you need to know about the complicated new format of the tournament.
The 2024 Men’s U19 World Cup was originally scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka. Following the suspension of the Sri Lankan Board by the ICC during the 2023 World Cup, Sri Lanka lost the right to host the tournament and South Africa was selected as an alternative venue.
ICC men’s U19 World Cup 2024: How many teams will participate?
Sixteen teams will compete for the trophy at the U19 World Cup. The defending champions are India, who won the 2022 tournament under coach Yash Dar. This time they will be led by Uday Saharan, who will be hoping to retain their title and extend their lead as the most successful team in the history of the competition.
The 16 teams will be divided into 4 groups of 4 teams each. They are:
Group A: India, Bangladesh, Ireland, USAGroup B: England, South Africa, West Indies, Scotland
Group C : Australia, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Namibia
Group D: Afghanistan, Pakistan, New Zealand, Nepal
ICC men’s Under-19 World Cup 2024 format
In the first round, each team will play three games in one round-robin format. The top three teams from each group will qualify for the Super 6 phase.
Teams that qualify for Group A and Group D will be placed in one group, and teams from Group B and Group C will be placed in another group.
Each qualifying team will inherit the points, wins, and net run percentage achieved against the other two teams in the group that qualified for the Super 6.
In the Super 6 phase, each team plays two games. He will decide which of the two teams will play in the Super 6 based on two criteria. One is that the opponent does not qualify from the same group in the first round, and the opponent’s spot is different from the team’s standing.
For example, in a Super 6 group consisting of teams from Group B and Group C,the team that placed first in Group B would play the team that placed second and third in Group C. Masu.
Meanwhile, the 4th place teams from Group A and Group D will play against each other in the ranking match, and the 4th place teams from Group B and Group C will also play against each other.
