Steve Smith Slips Playing Scoop Shot, Gets Run Out To End Scratchy Innings

Watch: Steve Smith was the victim of an ugly run out during the first T20I between India and Australia today (November 23), after he slipped attempting a scoop shot and was caught inches short of his ground.

Smith reached his half-century with the ball and reached the 40 delivery milestone before being dismissed. He started an innings for the first time in this format and struggled to time the ball by scraping it while Josh Inglis pushed the Indian bowlers from the other end. In his 16 overs of the innings, Smith was batting half a score while Inglis was in his 90s.

When Smith parried the ball from Mukesh Kumar, he got out of the crease well and threw the ball straight at the fielder over his shoulder with his short, slender legs. But when Smith fell back under the force of the move, he slipped as Inglis headed for a single at the other end.

Inglis was already two-thirds of the way through the field when Smith got up and Prasidh Krishna tried to bowl to Mukesh on the bowler’s side. Smith sprinted down the wicket and stretched his body to push his bat into the crease, but Mukesh flicked the ball into the stumps and cleared the bails just before Smith’s bat crossed the line.

According to replays, Smith was inches from the ground when the sharp bail came on, but he was forced to retire on 52 of 41 balls. Australia reached 208-3 with Inglis scoring an incredible 110 runs off his 50 balls.
