Sri Lanka Batter Fails To Ground Bat, Watches Ball Onto Stumps In ‘Criminal’ Run Out v England

Sri Lanka’s Achni Kulasuriya fell victim to a bizarre run out in the second women’s ODI against England, caught short with her bat hovering over the crease despite watching the ball crash into the stumps.

After losing the T20I series 2-1, England bounced back with a comfortable seven-wicket win in the first ODI. In the second game of the 50-over series, they continued to up the ante, with every bowler chipping in to reduce the visitors to 106 for 9.

The only wicket that did not go to the bowler was the last one. Hasini Perera, who remained unbeaten in matchday 31, defended Sarah Glen offside as Kate Cross forced the ball upfield. That was supposed to be the case, except that the cross found her non-striker, who had left her expecting a single from her own field, and hurled it at her stumps.

Still, no drama occurred and Krasliyya should have had enough time to return to her role. Instead, she simply watched the ball hit the stumps, but replays showed the number 10 did not put his bat on the ground as he walked back to safety.

Daniel Norcolth commented on the BBC Test Match Special that the match was “criminal”, while Sky’s Lydia Greenway mercifully described it as “not a very good exposure”.

However, this was the final act of the match as the players were forced to leave the field due to rain and restarting was not yet possible.
