Shubman Gill Closes Gap With Babar Azam For The No.1 ODI Batter Spot In ICC Rankings

India’s Shubman Gill is inching closer to the top spot in the ICC ODI batting rankings by closing the gap with current number 1 holder Babar Azam in the latest update dated September 27, 2023.

Shubman Gill was rested for the third ODI in the ongoing series against Australia. But before that, the Punjab batsman had scored 178 runs in the two matches he played. He scored his 74 in his first ODI in Mohali and his 104 in his second match in Indore.

Gill currently has a total of 847 rating points, leaving him just 10 rating points behind Babar ahead of the start of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup on October 5.

With Gill missing the final match between India and Australia and Pakistan not playing an official ODI until the World Cup opener, Babar will enter the tournament with the highest rating of the year. Although Babar and Gill are far ahead of their competition, the battle for the top spot in the batsmen’s rankings will remain fiercely competitive throughout his six weeks of the World Cup.

Despite the fact that a large part of the team’s ODI series against England was ruined by rain, Ireland youngster Harry Tector surged to fourth place and set a new career high. South African powerhouse Rassie van der Dussen (743 points) ranks third in the batsmen’s rankings, with more than 100 points separating him from the top two.

India’s Shreyas Iyer (up 8 places to 30th) and KL Rahul (up 6 places to 33rd) also moved up in the rankings this week after performing well against Australia.

Mohammad Siraj continues to maintain a narrow lead in the list of ODI bowlers. Siraj did not play in the ODI series against Australia but rose to the top of the rankings with six wickets in the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka earlier this month. He currently leads Australian seamer Josh Hazlewood with his 11 points.

The top 10 ODI bowlers are separated by just 55 rating points, with Australia’s veteran spinner Adam Zampa moving to seventh place after picking up three wickets in the first two matches against India.

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami (up 9 places to 25th place) and Australian pacer Sean Abbott (up 14 places to 45th place) are also making good progress on this list.
