A 16th ODI hundred from West Indies skipper Shai Hope guided his side to an impressive four-wicket victory over England in the series opener in Antigua.
England scored 325 from 50 overs with a quick start from Phil Salt, reaching 70 in seven overs before Harry Brooke’s half-century, with Sam Curran and Brydon Kearse scoring 66 runs for eight wickets. England won
Arik Athanadze got the West Indies innings off to a good start by scoring 66 off 65 balls, but he was denied by Rehan Ahmed and Gus Atkinson replaced Athanadze’s opening partner Brandon in the next over. – By getting rid of King, the West Indies were put in a disadvantageous position. Return the required allocation. England showed good control in the middle overs and after Sherfan Rutherford fell, West Indies were 213-5 in 39 overs, needing 113 more to win. In the end they won with seven balls remaining.
Hope was the West Indies star who scored his 16th and fastest ODI hundred while walking down the hall alongside Romario Shepherd. His explosive 28-ball 48 reduced the required run rate to some extent, making it more manageable. West Indies’ most targeted bowler was Sam Curran. He conceded 98 runs from 9.5 overs, the most runs conceded by an English bowler in a men’s ODI. Rehan Ahmed was a bright spot for the visitors with figures of 2-40 from his 10 overs.
After the match, Hope said that his conversation with former India captain MS Dhoni shaped his thinking on how he wants to approach ODIs.

“I spoke to MS Dhoni and he said, ‘You always have more time than you think,'” Hope said. “I’ve played a lot of ODI cricket and you always aim to win in any position. He (Shepherd) was one of the guys who was great and reliable. We got the win, so we were at full speed. I would like to continue the series.”
