Rwanda hand Nigeria’s Super Eagles early Christmas gift, ambush South Africa in Butare

The Super Eagles ended 2023 with two disappointing draws, but Wasps gave Nigerians something to smile about before the end of the year

After Wasps comfortably defeated South Africa 2-0 in the second round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualification, Rwanda gave Nigeria the best gift of the year.

After defeating Benin Republic 2-1 at home, South Africa looked to pick up another three points against Rwanda and extend their lead over Nigeria to four points.

But Rwanda had other motivations and Wasps executed their plan perfectly in the first 30 minutes at Butare’s Hue Stadium.

The innocent Nshuti gave the home team the lead in the 12th minute. He ran to the ball over the top and fired a low shot into the bottom right corner of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

South Africa had barely recovered from its shocking beginnings when hornets stung Bafana Bafana again.

Gilbert Mugisha took advantage of a defensive lapse in the penalty area and doubled the hosts’ lead with a deft and beautiful finish.

South Africa fought hard to counterattack in the second half, but Rwanda’s determined defense prevented them from even allowing a goal.

The win against one of the group favorites moves Rwanda to the top of Group C with four points from two games.

South Africa are in second place with three points, one more than Nigeria in third place.

Recall that Nigeria suffered two disappointing 1-1 draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

However, the Super Eagles were able to get off to a good start heading into Matchday 3 against South Africa in June 2024.

If Nigeria wins this match, they will move ahead of three-time African champions Bafana Bafana in Group C.

In the other group match, Lesotho played Gernot Rohr against Benin in a goalless draw in Durban.
