Roger Federer defends ‘unbelievable’ Carlos Alcaraz despite recent defeats

Roger Federer has praised Carlos Alcaraz’s victory over Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, insisting the Spaniard has “done as much as he could” in his young career so far.

Federer appeared in the final stages of this year’s Shanghai Masters, but Alcaraz had already left the tournament after losing in the fourth round to Grigor Dimitrov.

With this loss, Alcaraz lost his fifth consecutive title shot. He achieved his last victory at Wimbledon.

However, Federer had only positive things to say about the 20-year-old on the ATP Tennis Radio podcast: “Alcaraz is great. He’s still young and everything he’s achieved, not just on sand and hard surfaces, is great.

“Winning against Novak in the Wimbledon final is no joke. He didn’t really have to prove this point, but this is another super asterisk on his resume. Very impressive It’s true.”

The former world number one also drew comparisons to himself and other members of the Big Four. “Of course, everyone expects it now, like with Rafa (Nadal), Novak, myself and (Andy) Murray. This generation has to play their best tennis every week, but is difficult to achieve.”

Federer continued: “I think Carlos has done the best he can so far. He’s doing great, even though he loses sometimes, like here in Shanghai. He has a great game and is definitely a believer in A future like no other awaits.”

The 42-year-old recalled Alcaraz’s Wimbledon victory over Djokovic, which made Federer the only player to win the most singles titles (eight), and said the final was “just a small part. He admitted that he only saw “.

“At the Wimbledon final, I literally only watched a few matches that day because I was running around and doing things with my kids,” Federer said. “At one point I looked right in and said, ‘Okay, I watched a little bit of the Wimbledon final,’ you know?”

He added: “Of course I was interested. I used to check it every once in a while, but it was painful to sit down. But of course I was happy because the matches were great. And I love when great stories come out of games, and this year too, Novak What Carlos was able to accomplish was incredible.”

As Federer continues to enjoy retirement, Alcaraz will turn his attention to Switzerland’s home tournament in Basel, where he has won more championships than anyone else (10).

In the baseline…

Despite not being at his best in recent months, Alcaraz still managed to reach the later stages of the tournament and put in some great performances. It was still a very good year for the Spaniard, who won six titles, including a Grand Slam (Wimbledon) and two Masters 1000 titles (Indian Wells and Madrid). Alcaraz has openly admitted that Federer is his idol, so these comments will definitely give him confidence and morale
