Reece Topley Sustains Suspected Broken Finger, Jofra Archer Not An Option To Replace Him If Ruled Out

Reece Topley could miss the rest of England’s World Cup campaign with a suspected broken finger after sustaining the injury in their defeat to South Africa today (October 21).

Topley injured his left index finger early in the match in Mumbai, and his finger was also bruised after a straight tackle from Rassie van der Dussen. After receiving treatment on the field, he attempted to continue bowling, but left the field immediately after the next ball feeling his visible discomfort.

He returned to the field for the last 20 overs against South Africa and resumed bowling, taking two wickets in his first two overs of attack. However, in the last over of the innings he was pulled away by Marco Jansen, in the same over he hit a six on his third and he a four on, and in 8.5 overs he was 3-88.

England have named only one of three possible traveling reserves in addition to their 15-man squad. Jofra Archer is training with the group in India but will not be considered as Topley’s replacement if he is unable to take part in the remaining matches of the tournament as a result of the scan.

“Joff isn’t really considered for selection,” Mott said. “He has been discharged from the hospital and reported to medical staff, but will not be able to play a role at the end of this campaign.”

If Topley’s scans reveal a broken finger, England will have to field a replacement bowler. Her next match will be against Sri Lanka on Thursday 26th October.
