Afghanistan chose a cautious approach after choosing to attack first. Thanks to Ibrahim Zadran’s unbeaten score of 129 (143), he steadily increased his points and became the first individual to reach 100 World Cup wins. Rashid Khan hoped to secure a late victory as he reached the crease in the 46th over with the team’s score 233-5.
On the first ball of the 50th over, Rashid’s attempt to hit Mitchell Starc downtown resulted in a third-man boundary on one edge. His third ball of the over disappeared for his six as Rashid flexed his muscles and hit Starc with a flat shot to long-off.
Rashid once again used the long handle on the penultimate ball and hit the left seamer for another top score. It was an amazing shot, as even though the batsman ducked deep without seeing much of the ball, he still managed to place the ball in the middle of deep field, scoring six points. An unbeaten performance in 35 out of 18 games took Afghanistan to 291 wins and 5 losses, setting Wankhede the biggest target in history.
