George Russell reckons it is positive that Mercedes is not dwelling too much why they are behind Red Bull by already deploying new concept for F1 2024.
After two years of trial, Mercedes have been forced to change its concept for the 2024 F1 season. They thought things would work in 2023 but realised quickly that it wouldn’t. Even the ‘zero-pod’ idea was shed away pretty quickly to work on the future.
This year is supposed to be a clean slate for Mercedes and Russell reckons it is positive that the team are not dwelling too much in ascertaining why they are behind Red Bull. They are already in action to change things and surge ahead as soon as possible.
“I think we’re taking a clean slate into next year’s car,” said Russell. “I think that the positive is we’re not scratching our heads why we’re so far behind Red Bull. We see so many flaws with this car, which gives every single person back at the factory so much motivation and fire to chase after those problems and find those solutions, which we think will make a good step.
“But, of course, I expect Red Bull to make a step again. But I’ve got no doubt, come Bahrain, we’ll be in a stronger position than we were in Bahrain last year,” summed up Russell, as he stressed on the massive task that they have at hands in the winter with less than 100 days to prepare for the new season.
“I think the task for everybody is massive,” said Russell. “We’re all trying to catch up to the most dominant car in F1 history. So that’s no short task, and everybody’s going to have to come together, really focused, really put everything into it and time will tell.
“But I think we are in this winter in a much better place than we were 12 months ago and two years ago. So we hope we’re not going to stumble over anything. But as I said, time will tell,” summed up Russell.
