“Perfect week” – Ajax star Akpom heaves sigh of relief after goals against Heerenveen, Volendam

The former Eredivisie champions won back-to-back titles for the first time this season, with the 28-year-old Super Eagles prospect playing a key role.

Ajax Amsterdam striker Chuba Akpom described the past few days as a perfect week after scoring back-to-back goals for the club, Soccernet.ng reported.

Akpom joined Ajax from Middlesbrough in the summer but has struggled to settle in with the Eredivisie giants.

However, after failing to score in five games, Akpom opened his Ajax account on Thursday and came on as a substitute, helping the struggling Amsterdam side to a 2-0 victory over FC Volendam.

Three days later, the former Arsenal star played just 17 minutes on the pitch, but scored a stunning brace to lead Ajax to a convincing 4-1 victory over SC Heerenveen. That was all I needed to guide me.

After the match, the 28-year-old striker described the passage of time as a “perfect week” on his Twitter account.

Akpom, who finished last season as the English Championship’s best player, also revealed more about why he fell short of his best at Ajax.

The Super Eagles forward admitted that he felt let down by the club in his first few weeks in Amsterdam, which led to a drop in his performance.

According to Voetbal Primeur, Akpom told ESPN, “It was very difficult.”

“I tried to present myself as a professional. But it was really difficult because we were in a different country, environment, and team at a different hotel.

“For the first two months I felt like I was left alone. A lot has happened recently. We were not a normal Ajax. But with two wins in a row, my confidence returned and the situation should be even better.”

Akpom only featured in Ajax’s starting lineup once, in a 3-1 defeat against FC Twente.

He hopes to be back in the starting XI when Ajax face Brighton & Hove at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Thursday in Round 4 of the UEFA Europa League.
