Official: Super Eagles star formerly on the books of Barcelona joins five-time NPFL winners Heartland FC

The four-time Nigeria international will help Owerri millionaires maintain their newly acquired top-flight status

NNL champions Heartland FC have announced the signing of Super Eagles winger Ezekiel Joe Bassey, reports Soccernet.ng.

Bassey teams up with Naze Millionaire to start a new life in the Nigeria Professional Football League.

Heartland were relegated from the NPFL last year after an unforgettable poor season, but bounced back admirably to finish first in League Two.

Heartland, a five-time NPFL champion, three-time Federation Cup champion and two-time Super Cup champion, is hoping to avoid an immediate return to the National League.

The signing of wing wizard Bassey will be a huge boost to the club’s ambitions.

Born in Akwa Ibom, Bassey started his career with Akwa Starlets and spent time with Akwa United before moving to Enyimba International where his career blossomed.

Bassey won the club’s Player of the Year award when Enyimba won the Nigeria FA Cup in 2014 and the league title the following year.

Around the same time, Bassey was called up to the Super Eagles for the first time and made his full debut in a World Cup qualifier against Swaziland.

His profile attracted the attention of Barcelona, who signed him on loan to the B team on transfer deadline day in January 2017.

After Barcelona failed to make the loan move permanent, Bassi played in Iran with Paykan and Egypt, and with Al Masri and Petrojet.

The 26-year-old attacker spent last season with his hometown club Akwa United and this is his third appearance for the Promise Keepers.
