Novak Djokovic calls for Davis Cup Finals rethink: ‘It has to travel!’

Novak Djokovic has taken aim at the current state of Davis Cup, calling for an end to Spain’s monopoly on hosting finals.

The Davis Cup is one of the oldest tennis tournaments and is traditionally known for its home and away matches played in front of highly partisan audiences.

While this created an energy found nowhere else in tennis, it also proved logistically difficult, with top players often having difficulty fitting it into their schedules.

Redesigned in 2019 by investment group Cosmos and renamed the World Cup of Tennis, the week-long final event will take place in November.

However, all four of these events took place in Spain, and with the Cosmos gone, Djokovic hopes this will bring Davis Cup back.

“This is a tournament that takes place all over the world,” Djokovic told reporters in Malaga. “He should not stay in one place for more than a year.”

The future of Davis Cup is currently uncertain after the ITF ended its partnership with the Cosmos earlier this year. The tournament will remain, but the format will almost certainly change in some way.

This question should only be decided against Djokovic after consulting the players.

“So far, no one at the ITF has really communicated with us, so everyone should have their say,” he said.

“I don’t think we all agree, and there are probably different opinions, but Davis Cup has been very famous for its home and away games in the past.

“It’s too much for one country to host the [Final] Eight for four years. We have to travel.”
