Jose Peceiro has been widely criticized in Nigerian football circles following the team’s recent dismal performance
Former Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane has expressed his desire to coach the national team and highlighted his admiration for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Soccernet.ng reported.
Mosimane is known for his success with Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns and previously coached the Nigeria national team.
In a recent interview with the South African Football Journalists Association (SAFJA), he praised Nigeria and expressed his ambition to lead the team to the World Cup.
The former Bafana Bafana coach evaluated the Super Eagles line-up and acknowledged the team’s talent.
“To be honest, I would like to coach in the World Cup. I do not choose what comes, I would like to go to the World Cup. South Africa wants to qualify, Nigeria wants to qualify,
“If you have Chukwueze and the boy who plays for Napoli as a striker, that’s true. “This Nigerian team is great,” he said.
Mosimane commented on Nigeria’s recent performance in World Cup qualifiers and expressed concern about possible disruptions that could affect the team’s momentum.
“We saw draws with Lesotho and Zimbabwe. Well, it’s football, it happens. But how can politics between the government and the association derail a team?” he asked.
Looking ahead to Nigeria’s next World Cup qualifier against South Africa in 2024, Mosimane acknowledged Nigeria’s strength while expressing a desire for his country to win.
“Of course I want South Africa to win because I am a South African, but the fact is I think Nigeria has a team,” he said.
Speculation over a possible replacement has emerged as dissatisfaction with Peseiro grows following Nigeria’s disappointing performance.
Mosimane, whose name is among those rumored for the role, has indirectly hinted that he is interested in coaching the Super Eagles and leading them to the World Cup.
“We really want to go to the World Cup, but we have to be a good team to qualify,” he stressed.
As the Super Eagles qualify and prepare for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, hopes of winning a fourth AFCON trophy are high.
