New Zealand Squad Update: Tim Southee Available For Selection Against India

New Zealand pacer Tim Southee is available for selection in the World Cup 2023 match against India on October 22 after recovering from a finger injury.

New Zealand received a big boost on the eve of their exciting World Cup match against India at Dharamshala. Southie, an experienced quickie who suffered a broken thumb, is considered fit to play. He was injured in an ODI against England ahead of the quadrennial tournament. Southie immediately underwent surgery and missed the opening World Cup matches against England, Netherlands and Bangladesh.

Unfortunately, Southie’s absence was not the only injury New Zealand suffered during the season. Captain Kane Williamson made his comeback against Bangladesh after a year-long absence due to a quad injury, but suffered a serious injury when he was hit by Shakib Al Hasan’s throw, fracturing his thumb. He has been ruled out for the next few games, but could return at a later stage.

Assistant captain Tom Latham gave an update on the pair at a press conference. “Yes, Kane is obviously still struggling with his thumb injury. It’s a day-to-day process for him as well. We’re hopeful that he’ll be available later in the tournament. And as far as Tim is concerned, he Subject to selection.”

Considering Dharamshala’s swing situation, Southee will be in the starting lineup right away. So either Matt Henry or Lockie Ferguson will make way for an experienced bowler. Ferguson’s lethal strength allows him to retain his position, meaning Southey will replace Henry in the team.

India and New Zealand go into the big match unbeaten, with both countries having won four out of four matches. New Zealand took her 8 points and are at the top of the points table with a net run rate increase of +1.923. On the other hand, India has scored the same number of points but has a worse NRR of +1.659.
