Jose Peceiro replaced Austin Eguavoen as Super Eagles coach in May 2022 and led the team to AFCON 2024.

The Portuguese was first appointed as Nigeria’s manager in May 2022 after Austin Eguavoen failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. His contract expired in June 2023, but the extension was confirmed by the NFF and the 63-year-old took a pay cut.

The former Porto coach wants to take his team to new heights at AFCON 2024 and revealed that his players played a big role in his decision to take a pay cut in order to remain in charge of the team.

“The players encouraged me to stay because they believe we can win the AFCON. We can win. The players know that. They are Super Eagles. I came with the same energy and the same belief to fight for,” the coach said in a quote published byPunch.

However, Peseiro sent a strong warning to his players, telling them they must do their best to reach the final stage of the AFCON tournament to be held in Ivory Coast next January.

“We have to do our best because we know there will be considerable resistance. We have Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast. But we “I believe we can do it. I believe. And the players believe,” he added.

The Super Eagles will take on “Let’s do it again” as their motto for the 2024 AFCON season, as they take on hosts Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau in Group A.

The Super Eagles will face Equatorial Guinea in their opening match on Monday, January 14 at the Alhassan Quattara Stadium. They face the hosts four days later and will face Guinea-Bissau in the final group game in January 2022.
