Watch: Mohammed Shami took two wickets in three balls, dismissing Kane Williamson and Tom Latham, to pull the World Cup semi-final back into India’s grasp.
New Zealand were beginning to find their way in the massive 398-man run chase. After losing the first two wickets in the powerplay, Williamson and Darryl Mitchell formed a monster partnership and were able to reach 220-2 in 32 overs. Four overs earlier, Shami had left Williamson a sitter at mid-wicket in what could have been the decisive moment of the match.
Shami, who had already taken two wickets in the first over, was brought on in the second over to break the partnership. Mitchell reached his fifth ODI century from the first ball of Shami’s over, sinking his ball off his pads to pull up triple digits and move Williamson into bat.
After the second pitch, Williamson seemed to go up a lot. His shot skied high up Shami’s leg side, rose into the air and landed at deep square leg. Suryakumar Yadav waited on the boundary and took a comfortable catch, giving Shami his 50th wicket of the World Cup.
Williamson had to settle for 69, but Shami was relieved considering the earlier drop and Latham escaped to the crease. He played Shami’s next ball and scored, missed wide with a block, but flicked the next ball wide. Shami rolled around the wicket and pushed the ball to Latham, but Latham missed the ball completely and hit it on his front pad.
When Richard Illingworth immediately raised his finger, the ball appeared to be driven into the stump of his leg. These two wickets of his took New Zealand from her 220-2 to 220-4, taking the match decisively back to India.
