Watch: Kane Williamson threw his bat down in anguish after a throw from Shakib Al Hasan hit him on his left thumb. It forced him to retire hurt during the 2023 World Cup game between New Zealand and Bangladesh.
Williamson returned from a six-month injury layoff to play in the Bangladesh match wearing a knee brace, but it was not the best return in professional cricket. He injured his thumb and was forced to withdraw from the match. Williamson, who posted a batting 77, started hitting a tight single on the first ball of the 38th over. Shakib al-His Hasan collected the ball in the middle and threw it towards the stumps in one go.
The ball missed the wicket but ended up hitting Williamson’s thumb, causing him to throw the bat to the ground in pain. He had his hand badly bandaged, but he continued to hit two more balls until he was sent off for 78.
After sustaining the injury in the IPL 2023 opener on March 31, Williamson underwent surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament and was in a race against time to get fit for the World Cup.
He missed the first two games of the tournament and appeared in his first official game in more than six months on Friday. However, his two matches over a six-month period ended in similar results for Williamson, with pain forcing him to retire on both occasions.
