Kane Williamson’s injury woes seem never-ending as he has been ruled out of the next few 2023 World Cup matches due to a fractured thumb. He suffered the injury after being struck by a direct throw during the New Zealand-Bangladesh clash on Friday (October 13).
Williamson played in a professional game for the first time in more than six months after undergoing surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament, and made a memorable comeback against Bangladesh, scoring an impressive 78 in swinging conditions. However, the night did not end as expected. He retires due to a thumb injury.
The New Zealand captain’s single was a close 77, but he might have missed if Najmul Hossain Shanto had hit directly. However, he eventually reached the goal area safely, but his thumb was damaged when his ball came in and bounced into his left hand.
Williamson continued to bat, but left the game with an injury after two pitches, and the batter said after the game that his thumb was “fat and colorful.” The day after his injury, it was revealed that he had fractured his thumb and would not be able to play in the next World Cup match.
However, he has not been officially ruled out and the team hopes he can play in the final few games.
Tom Blundell has been named as Williamson’s replacement, but is not officially part of the team.
