The Portuguese tactician would not be short of suitors after guiding the Super Eagles to the final of the 2023 AFCON
The Algeria Football Federation are keen on appointing Jose Peseiro as the head coach of their national team, Soccernet.ng reports.
Peseiro led Nigeria’s Super Eagles to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire this month in his first attempt to become one of the most popular coaches on the continent.
After Peseiro’s exploits at the AFCON, the Portuguese tactician is the Algeria FF’s favourite candidate to take over the Desert Warriors, according to DZ Foot.
Other candidates on the FAF’s wishlist include former Real Madrid coach Carlos Queiroz and 60-year-old Swiss Vladimir Petkovic.
Algeria won the AFCON in 2019, beating Nigeria in the semifinals. However, the Fennec Foxes failed to make it past the group stage of the 2021 and 2023 editions and have not won any of their last six games in the competition.
Peseiro is reportedly in contact with Algeria FF boss Walid Sadi but the Portuguese tactician is waiting to clarify his situation with the Nigeria Football Federation.
The former Porto manager’s contract with Nigeria expired at the conclusion of the AFCON, but it is not yet clear if the NFF wants to extend his deal.
Peseiro was appointed head coach of the Super Eagles in May 2022.
In the 22 games he has overseen since then, the 63-year-old has a record of ten wins, five draws and seven losses.
The most disappointing of the defeats came on Sunday in Abidjan when hosts Cote d’Ivoire secured a 2-1 victory over Nigeria to lift the AFCON trophy.
