The Super Eagles striker performed well last year and is on track to win the CAF’s top award
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen said he is looking forward to winning the CAF Player of the Year award in 2023, reported Soccer.
Osimhen was one of the best players on the continent last year. The 24-year-old scored 31 goals in 39 appearances for Napoli last season.
His talent led him to break the Serie A scoring records of George Weah and Samuel Eto’o. He also helped the Partenopeans win their first Scudetto in 33 years and reach the UEFA Champions League’s quarter-finals for the first time.
Due to last year’s success, the Super Eagles striker is one of the frontrunners for the CAF Player of the Year award. Osimhen also has stiff competition from players like Yassin Bounou and Achraf Hakimi, but he seems to stand out from the rest.
Ahead of the awards ceremony on December 11, Osimhen said he was looking forward to being crowned continental player of the year.
“It would mean a lot to me,” Osimhen told Pulse.
“In 2015, when I won the (CAF) Youth Player of the Year (award), I watched the winner (Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang) receive the podium (CAF POTY award). ).
“Since then, it has become my dream to participate in and win such a prestigious competition.
“I think we now have a huge opportunity to make this dream come true. I’m really looking forward to it and hope to be back.”
The last time a Nigerian player won the CAF Player of the Year award was in 1999, but Osimhen would like to end that wait.
