Akpom just found his footing last season and hopes to continue his consistent performances
Nigerian striker Chuba Akpom has expressed his admiration for Arsenal striker Dennis Bergkamp and believes their playing styles are similar, reports Soccernet Ta.
Akpom completed a €14 million move from Middlesbrough to Dutch giants Ajax in the summer transfer window.
The 27-year-old striker shocked everyone last season, scoring 29 goals in 41 appearances for Boro. It was the first time in his career that the Arsenal academy graduate had achieved such a high figure. After a great performance for the club, Ajax replaced him.
There were many questions about Akpom’s best position as he barely performed as a striker. In fact, Michael Carrick’s decision to play Dessers as a second striker was a major reason for last season’s strong form.
The Nigerian striker has shed more light on his playing style and feels there are some similarities with former Arsenal player Bergkamp.
“Berkamp is a great player and of course he also played for Ajax. He could play as a false nine and decide the match,” Akpom told Ajax TV

“He was also very physical. Everyone talks about his technique, but he was ruthless. I also try to play as a second striker, so there’s a bit of that. I also have the technical and physical qualities.”
“It’s good to use these types of players as inspiration and learn as much as possible from them.”
Akpom made his full debut for the club in the 3-1 defeat against Twente. The 27-year-old hasn’t particularly impressed, but he will look to get back into his groove soon.
