‘I would like to play for Nigeria’– Luton Town star Elijah Adebayo set to snub England’s Three Lions

Luton Town’s Elijah Adebayo has been in great form since the start of the 2023-24 English Premier League season.

Super Eagles forward Ilya Adebayo has announced his intention to play for the Nigeria national team, Soccernet.ng reported.

The 26-year-old has been in great form for newly promoted Luton Town, scoring nine goals in 23 league games. That includes a hat-trick against Brighton, which was vital for their promotion from the relegation zone.

Adebayo’s goal-scoring vision and ability has earned him offers from several clubs looking to strengthen their squad with his signature.

However, some in the Nigerian football community would rather see him play in the green, white and green Nigeria jersey than play for the Three Lions.

Meanwhile, Elijah, who was born in England and has Nigerian parents, has the potential to play for the Nigerian Super Eagles now or in the future if the opportunity arises.

“I want to play for Nigeria. It would make my mother happy and proud. We talked about it. Would I play for England? Which comes first? It depends. If I played for Nigeria or England, my mother would be proud, but especially if I played for Nigeria,” he said, as quoted by The Times.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles lost 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, finishing as runners-up.

Illya Adebayo’s mother was busy cheering on the Super Eagles during the final match of the tournament, as reported by The Athletic.
