‘I should have won’ – Ex-Chelsea star Mikel Obi claims he deserved Champions League man of the match award

John Mikel Obi made 372 appearances for Chelsea between 2006 and 2017, winning every major award during his time at the west London club.

Former Super Eagles midfielder John Mikel Obi has claimed he should have won the Man of the Match award for his outstanding performance in the 2012 UEFA Champions League final against Bayern Munich, Soccernet .ng reported.

Mikel, then 25, was one of the Blues’ standout players on that historic night in Munich, where his talent helped Chelsea win their first Champions League title.

Bayern took the lead late in the second half with a goal from Thomas Müller, but Didier Drogba equalized for Chelsea five minutes later, sending the game into extra time, but Arjen Robben missed the penalty. Petr Cech deflected a low shot.

With the teams tied at 1-1, the match ended in a penalty shootout, with Chelsea winning 4-3 and clinching their first Champions League title. This made them the first London club to win the tournament.

Mikel spent a further four and a half years at the London club before leaving in January 2017 following the arrival of N’Golo Kante.

Six-and-a-half years later, the Nigerian player returned to Stamford Bridge, linking up with 2012 heroes John Terry, Florent Malouda, Ramirez, Michael Essien, Salomon Kalou and Petr Cech. He contributed to Chelsea Legend’s 4-0 win. Last Saturday, we won at home against Bayern Munich Legends.

Mikel was part of the team that won Nigeria’s third African Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 2013 and a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
