The Premier League sides will keep an eye on the continental championships with a key Nigerian midfielder on their wishlist
Brentford are set to lose Frank Onyeka in this winter transfer window as several clubs in England and abroad are believed to be interested in the Nigerian midfielder, Soccernet.ng understands.
Onyeka only committed to a new four-year deal with Brentford in August, but he could be allowed to leave on loan this January.
According to Yahoo Sports, the Super Eagles ace is wanted by Premier League sides Everton and Fulham as well as by La Liga club Villarreal.
There is interest in the former FC Midtjylland man in the Italian Serie A, where Fiorentina has him on their wishlist. Onyeka is also believed to be a transfer target for French Ligue 1 side Lens.
Onyeka arrived from Denmark for €10 million in 2021 and has racked up 65 matches and three assists for Brentford.
Only a club willing to part with €20 million or more can convince Brentford to let Onyeka leave the club permanently, but it is believed that interested clubs only want him on loan until the end of the season.
Onyeka’s attention right now is, however, fixed on the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, where he has been selected among the 25 players to represent Nigeria.
In the absence of Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, Onyeka will look to be influential as the Super Eagles aim for a fourth continental honour in Cote d’Ivoire.
Onyeka has made 12 appearances for Nigeria, and this is the second time he will represent the three-time African champions at a major tournament.
He was a member of Nigeria’s squad for the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon but only featured as a substitute in the Super Eagles’ last Group D match against Guinea-Bissau.
