Finally! Sadiq Umar ends 448-day goal drought in spectacular fashion as Real Sociedad down Sevilla

Umar has yet to score since returning from injury in the summer, but he finally ended his drought on Sunday.

Super Eagles striker Sadiq Umar has scored his first goal for Real Sociedad since September 3, 2022, contributing to a 2-1 win over Sevilla in LaLigaSoccernet.ng reports.

Umar suffered a cruciate ligament injury last season and missed the season. However, he returned to Real Sociedad in the summer. But since his return, he has struggled to regain the form that saw him score 18 goals and provide six assists for Almeria two seasons ago.

Still, Real Sociedad coach Imanol Alguacil has faith in the 26-year-old. He gave Oumar his starting jersey when they welcomed Sevilla to the Reale Arena on Sunday.

Turi Urdin got off to a great start, taking the lead through Marko Dmitrović’s own goal in the third minute of the match.

And then, in the 22nd minute, Umar had a chance. He received the ball in midfield and advanced. The Nigerian striker was blocked by two Sevilla midfielders who swung past his guard. And he hit like a rocket from more than 35 meters away. The ball then flew into Sevilla’s top goal, making the final score 2-0.

This goal gave the match a decisive charm as neither team had any big chances in the first half.

Sevilla started the second half well, increasing the pressure on Real Sociedad and eventually leveling the score after an hour. Umar was brought on for Benato Turrientes in the 75th minute as coach Alguacil looked to assert his authority in midfield. Umar had three shots on goal, two dribbles and 28 touches on the ball.

Real Sociedad ultimately won the match 2-1, but it was not without drama as Sergio Ramos and Jesus Ramos were sent off in the 88th minute.
